The International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program (ICECP), now in its fifteenth year, continues to be a powerful catalyst for global change in the world of sport. Spearheaded by Dr. Matthew J. Robinson of the University of Delaware and in collaboration with the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), ICECP has graduated 460 coaches from 126 countries across 37 sports, significantly enhancing leadership and performance at all levels.
ICECP’s mission is rooted in a dual philosophy: “Sport Plus” and “Plus Sport” (Coalter, 2005). This means not only developing technical, managerial, and ethical coaching capabilities, but also using sport as a tool for societal development. Participants are trained to become influential leaders who will inspire future generations of athletes, coaches, and civic leaders, all while upholding the Olympic spirit.
Structured through a combination of residential modules, online learning, apprenticeships, and practical project implementation, ICECP offers a comprehensive and hands-on educational experience. Participants engage in modules hosted by the University of Delaware and the USOPC, then complete apprenticeships with elite national federations, universities, and professional clubs.
Despite challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, ICECP successfully pivoted to a robust virtual model. This shift expanded its reach, allowing greater participation from individuals who may not have been able to attend in-person sessions.
The real-world impact of ICECP is visible through its alumni projects. Initiatives include the development of national coaching frameworks in Ethiopia and Jordan, youth injury prevention in Slovenia, and promoting fencing and beach volleyball in underserved regions. Over 50% of these projects have grown in scope, serving communities long after program completion.
The program’s outcomes are exceptional: 99% of participants report increased coaching knowledge, while 97% feel more connected to the Olympic Movement. Nearly all graduates express readiness to train future coaches and enhance national sport programs.
ICECP’s companion initiative, the International Coaching Apprenticeship in Basketball (ICAB), launched in 2010, focuses specifically on basketball. Supported by NCAA Division I programs and professional organizations like the NBA and WNBA, ICAB prepares coaches for elite competition and leadership roles within their federations.
Looking forward, ICECP and ICAB are expanding their hybrid offerings—virtual, residential, and national—ensuring continued access and impact worldwide. As these programs grow, they remain steadfast in their goal: to make a lasting difference in sport, one coach at a time.
